Record number of women to be celebrated with English Heritage blue plaques in 2024

English Heritage has announced that this year a record number of women will be celebrated with blue plaques including Irene Barclay who became the first qualified woman chartered surveyor in 1922 and joined St Pancras Housing Association (now Origin Housing) in 1925.
 
English Heritage, a charity that manages over 400 historic monuments, buildings and places have said that for the first time in the history of the London Blue Plaques Scheme, which has run for more than 150 years, more plaques will be unveiled to individual women in 2024 than in any previous year. The charity launched its ‘plaques for women’ campaign in 2016, which encourages the public to nominate more amazing female figures from the past and we are now seeing the fruits of this initiative.

Some of the pioneering women who will be celebrated with a blue plaque in 2024 include; Christina Broom, who is believed to have been Britain’s first female press photographer, Diana Beck, celebrated as the UK’s first female neurosurgeon, the jazz singer, Adelaide Hall, one of the first Black women to secure a long-term contract at the BBC, and Irene Barclay, the first woman to qualify as a chartered surveyor. More recipients of blue plaques will be announced throughout the year.
