Although, schools have yet to finish for the summer, some local Councils have opened their application process for help with school uniform costs. For example Barnet Council are accepting applications through the Mayor's Benevolent Fund from Tuesday 1 July 2025 to Thursday 31 July 2025.
School uniform grants are non-repayable payments provided by some local councils to help low-income families cover the cost of school clothing. These grants can range from £30 to £200 per child, depending on where you live and your eligibility
To qualify, you usually need to be receiving means-tested benefits, such as:
- Universal Credit
- Child Tax Credit (without Working Tax Credit)
- Income Support
- Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
Some councils may also require your child to be entering a specific year group (e.g., starting secondary school).
To apply, visit your local council’s website or use the GOV.UK council finder to check what’s available in your area.
Other ways to get free or cheap uniforms
Many local charities, churches, and community centres run uniform swap shops or offer second-hand uniforms for free or at a low cost.
Some schools offer their own schemes or keep a stock of donated uniforms. It’s worth asking your child’s school directly.
Buy second-hand: Check Facebook Marketplace, charity shops, or school swap events.
