What is Asbestos?
Asbestos is a natural mineral fibre that was widely used in construction and manufacturing from the early 20th century until the late 20th century (1900 – 1999) it was valued for its heat resistance, durability and insulating properties. However, asbestos is known to pose serious health risks if its fibres become airborne and are inhaled.
Properties-built after the 2000 will not contain any asbestos containing materials (ACM) as it was out of the supply chain at this time. Origin Housing carry out asbestos surveys on all our properties.
If you have concerns about asbestos in your home, please contact us immediately by filling in the Contact us form on our website, email enquiries@originhousing.org.uk or call 0300 323 0325.
Safety First:
Asbestos containing materials that are undisturbed and remain in good condition generally do not pose a health risk. We may seal materials containing asbestos to stop any fibres escaping and action any further works required to make the area safe.
The danger arises when these materials are damaged or disturbed, releasing fibres in the air which are then inhaled.
If you are a tenant planning maintenance or do-it-yourself (DIY) work such as drilling, cutting and sanding you must request the approval of Origin Housing before you undertake such activities. This is to make sure that it is safe to do so and within the terms of your tenancy.
Your safety is our utmost priority, never attempt to handle or remove suspected asbestos containing materials yourself.
Important tips if you’re working on your home and suspect asbestos:
· Leave the Area: If you suspect asbestos, try to leave the immediate area to prevent inhaling any fibres that may have been released. Prevent any access to the area. Contact Origin Housing immediately.
· Avoid Disturbing the Material: Do not touch, scrape, or attempt to remove any suspected asbestos containing materials (ACM) yourself.
· Contact Origin Housing: Report the issue immediately to your housing association for trained professionals to assess and manage the situation safely.
